The fruit of Attalea maripa, commonly called maripa palm which is a palm native to tropical South America and Trinidad and Tobago. This fruit is yellow and edible that is oblong ovoid and cream. An edible oil can be extracted from the pulp of the fruit and from the kernel of the seed.

The name should be spelt "cocorite". The town of Cocorite carries the name because the entire mointainside was once covered with the palm trees before it was populated by homes. The fruit itself is a small, oval shaped palm nut, light brown in color, with a light coating of transarent pulp over the kernel. The tree does not grow beyond a couple of feet from the ground . . .
