The tree and fruit of Artocarpus heterophyllus. It is related to the breadfruit and breadnut. The tree produces the worlds largest tree borne fruit - up to 80lbs and 3 feet long. Shatine and Cowa are not the same. Related but not the same. People usually let the cowa ripe to eat as fruit. Shatine is used green for curry shatine popular at prayers and weddings. but you can cook green cowa as a substitute for shatine in talkari.

I only know it as Jackfruit. Folk lore in Jamaica says that if you travel with a whole Jackfruit, you will end up with a flat tire. So if you buy one it must be cut before you put it in the vehicle.

In Trinidad it's call Chataigne. It's a common dish for wedding and prays. If you don't have Chataigne in wedding n prays well it will cause problems. It is very nice n delicious. Tasty especially with bus up shot roti n curry it with a little pepper

Cowa is Jackfruit (when ripe smell funny but delicious, we dont normally cook it green in Trinidad but in most Asian countries they do, chataigne is breadnut (cooked curried) and breadfruit ( used in oildown etc.) are from the same family of fruits. Katarhar is also from the same family but they're all diffrent .
