A mabouya is not a gecko. The lizards often found in houses, and on ceilings, are zandolit.

It said that's what they call it in saint lucia not haiti. Although I've never heard them call it that in saint lucia

It is called Mabouya on some islands, but not in St. Lucia. They are called lizards or geckos here. To me, their call sounds more like a 'click' - just my opinion. Nam nath is also correct - it was the Carib name for a particular evil spirit.
