As a child found these insects all around the house and was happy to find them in British Columbia Canada and share the knowledge with them. He had never noticed them before and I was grateful when I came to this site and found a picture to share with him. Thanks
i assume that this insect was named after nanny of the maroons, our only female national hero . . . . and her "titty" lol thats kinda gross i have never seen this insect before and i don't want to . . . . it's creepy looking
We called them Nanny Goat in Clarendon We drop an ant in the hole and watch them come out and capture it. Awesome sight it was
We called them Nanny Back Back and boy! were they a wonder to behold. I would spend hours watching them weave their magic.when I was a child growing up in Jamaica. Those were the days.
I was not than grateful to find this site -as s child we would put our finger in the hole and call'nananny nanny came for your rice and peas and curry goat' now as an adult I was wondering what type of insect were we playing with were these insect dangerous or carried some contagious disease
In Jamaica would find these and say ‘ nanny goat nanny goat come for your supper, would use a stick and go round the hole till I found them and hold it in my hand! Would not do that now.😆. But never new till today that they ate ants.
" Nanzi " as we call them here on Aruba, where one of my toys as a kind. We picked up ants and deposite them in to the crater like trap they build, wait a second and the Nanzi will start comming up in to the trap by trowing tiny bit of sand in the sir, making the ant roll down on order to catch its pray.
This crazy !! Just laying and thinking about my childhood and remembering going under the houses to look for nanny...... thank God for the internet I now have more info about them.

I used to put them in my hand with some dirt and watch them burrow backwards and enjoyed how they tickled the palm of my hand. Watching them move around was amazing. Now I have a picture to show my kids. Thanks for making this available.
In St. Ann Jamaica we called them Back Nanny we would put them on a piece of cardboard and we would Sing, “Back nanny back nany back, front nanny front nanny front.” And they would move to the riddim corespondent to back when we said back and front when we said front.
We would say nanny, nanny buck buck come fi yu rice and peas and chicken and curry goat. If you don't come, mama and daddy will eat it aff. All this while making circular motions inside their circle. Then grabbing up a bunch of dirt in your hand, hoping the little insect was there. Pure joy if you felt that tickly movement in your hand middle.
Mystery creatures In Clarendon where I grew up I would look out for the nest and I would say nanny goat, nanny goat come for your rice and peas and curry goat and it would come crawling up then put it in my hand with some dirt as it tickles. Funny how 1 of my aunt who had died calling me days later in my sleep saying the same words but repeating my name 2x come for rice and peas and curry goat

I use to play with Nanny when I was a child living in Jamaica, it was fun. I am 65 years old and now living in America I still see Nanny holes. Thanks!
In Trench Town Jamaica my siblings and I would go behind the old house and find the holes then sing Nanny Nanny come for your rice and peas. We stir the hole with our finger or stick and say come back Nanny Nanny Titty eat Nanny Tirty sweet and wait for it to come out. You could watch it forever or hold in your hand. Thanks for sharing and igniting that memory from around four years old.

Yes I used to play with this insect in Jamaica when I was a child. I am living in USA my husband is an American and told him about this insect and he did not know it. I look it and show him. It was fun watching this insect backing up.

I catch a Nanny goat if you want to catch a Nanny goat you should put a stick right next to the Nanny goat and grab it fast when it's moving. and I saw my two Nanny goat breading.
